Staff SISk12 Browser Issues

Staff, are you having troubles with SISk12?  Please follow the directions below for help.

First off, let’s find out one thing: What version of Windows do you have?  This is actually a very easy thing to find out.  Simply look at the time on your computer.  Do you see the time and the date or just simply the time?

If you see the time and the date, you are running Windows 7.

If you see just the time, you’re running Windows XP.

Windows 7 - Internet Explorer

Windows 7 computers will open SISk12 (the desktop icon) in Internet Explorer.  Now we need to find out what version of Internet Explorer you have.  This is also very simple.  While in Internet Explorer, click on the “Help” menu option and look for the “What’s New in Internet Explorer [#]”.  This is the version of Internet Explorer that you have installed.

Note: Don’t see the menu bar?  Press the “Alt” key on your keyboard once.  The menu bar will either appear or the “File” menu will highlight for you to help you find it.

If you have Internet Explorer 8, 9 , or 10 and are using Windows 7, it’s time to upgrade.  Here’s how to upgrade your Internet Explorer:

  1. Double click on your “Computer” icon on your desktop or click on your Start Menu and select “Computer” from the right-hand side.
  2. Double-click on the “Public (F:)” drive.
  3. Double-click on the Installers folder.
  4. Double-click on the Internet Explorer folder.
  5. Double-click either IE11-Windows6.1-x64-en-us.exe or IE11-Windows6.1-x86-en-us.exe.  If the installer you chose comes up with an error saying “Operating System is not supported”, please try the other.
  6. An installer will appear.  This should be an easy install with no options that need to be changed.  We recommend restarting your computer when the installation is complete.

Note: The above steps only work while on campus.  Please update your Internet Explorer using Windows Updates or use Chrome or Firefox (see the Windows XP toggle) or Safari when working from home.

In Internet Explorer 11, Compatibility View must be turned off.  You can do this by following the instructions on this page: Compatibility View

In Internet Explorer 11, Enhanced Protection Mode must also be turned off.  To disable Enhanced Protection Mode:

  1. Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced tab.
  2. Find the “Enable Enhanced Protected Mode*” option near the bottom and make sure the option is unchecked.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Restart your computer.

Windows XP - Google Chrome (or Firefox)

In Windows XP your SISk12 icon on your desktop will automatically open in Google Chrome.  If you prefer, you can also use Firefox as an alternative.

Note: Internet Explorer (any version) will not work with Windows XP for SISk12.  Please use either Chrome or Firefox.

Make sure the settings listed below are correct for everything in SISk12 to run as necessary.

Chrome’s default PDF viewer should work fine for normal operations.  Special Education teachers will need to find a Windows 7 computer before attempting to work on their Special Education Documents.

  1. Go to Tools -> Options -> Applications tab.
  2. Look for “Portable Document Format (PDF)” or “Adobe Acrobat Document” in the list and change the “Action” to “Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox).”
  3. Close and reopen Firefox.

SISk12 Takes a Long Time to Load PDF Documents

If SISk12 takes a long time to load PDF documents on your computer, we now finally have a fix!  Please go through the steps below to update your Adobe Reader.

Note: the following steps will only apply when on campus.

  1. Double click on your “My Computer” icon on your desktop or click on your Start Menu and select “Computer” from the right-hand side.
  2. Double-click on the “Public (F:)” drive.
  3. Double-click on the Installers folder.
  4. Double-click on the “Adobe Software” folder.
  5. If you are using Windows XP, double click on “Adobe Reader 11.0.10 Automatic Setup.”
    Or
If you are using Windows 7, double click on “Adobe Reader DC 2015.008.20082 Automatic Setup – Windows 7 Only.”
  6. This will uninstall the current version of Adobe Reader that you have and install the newest version available for your system.  You should see two progress bars throughout the course of the install.  The program will tell you when it’s finished. (It will probably take around 1-2 minutes.)
At home you can download the newest version of Adobe Reader (as of 4/7/2015) by clicking on the link below.

Windows XP and Vista – Adobe Reader 11.0.10

Windows 7 and up – Acrobat Reader DC 2015.008.20082

The installer is an easy “Next, Next, Install” program.  Once finished:

  1. Open up your “Adobe Reader 11” or “Acrobat Reader DC” (the icon should be on your desktop).
  2. Go to Edit -> Preferences.
  3. Click on “Security (Enhanced)” from the list on the left-hand side.
  4. Uncheck “Enable Protected Mode at startup.”
  5. Click “OK” and close out of Adobe Reader.

Close out of Internet Explorer and Chrome or restart your computer and try SISk12 again.

Getting errors when viewing SISk12?  Take a glance at the error fixes below for help.

Error: To view the full contents of this document, you need a later version of the PDF viewer.

When viewing some documents in SISk12 you may see the following error:

To view the full contents of this document, you need a later version of the PDF viewer. You can upgrade
to the latest version of Adobe Reader from www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

For further support, go to www.adobe.com/support/products/acrreader.html

This can mean one of many things.

First let’s make sure everything is up to date.

Adobe Reader:  When you first saw the above error you probably followed exactly what it said and installed the newest version of Adobe Reader yourself.  If you haven’t done so, please follow the instructions under the green “SISk12 Takes a Long Time to Load PDF Documents” toggle above.

Adobe Reader Font Pack: This is something that many Special Education documents require due to the practice of typing things into Word then copying and pasting into SISk12.  Please download the font pack for your version of Adobe Reader (11 or DC) from the website below and run the installer:
Adobe Reader 11 Font Pack
Acrobat Reader DC Font Pack

Try opening your file in SISk12 again.

Okay, so you’ve done the above but the error still comes up?  Now we’ll need to look at which browser you’re using.

Google Chrome and Internet Explorer should work without troubles using the default settings.

For Firefox, just like above in the Windows XP section, these settings are required for PDF files to be shown correctly.  Please make sure these settings are correct in your browser.

  1. Go to Tools -> Options -> Applications tab.
  2. Look for “Portable Document Format (PDF)” or “Adobe Acrobat Document” in the list and change the “Action” to “Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox).”
  3. Close and reopen Firefox.

Try opening your file in SISk12 again.

PDFs Open in Adobe Reader Instead of Staying in the Browser

We’re not yet sure what causes this, but installing the newest version of Adobe Reader seems to fix the issue.  Please follow the instructions under the green “SISk12 Takes a Long Time to Load PDF Documents” toggle above.
